Perfect for both violin music novice and seasoned collector

This set collects performances of various vintages and sonic quality from the former Soviet Meloydia label. Some of the performances are available elsewhere, and some have been bettered by the same artist under different conductors. However, the range and beauty of pieces and performance quality in this set is perhaps unparalleled, making it, in my opinion, the single most rewarding introduction to great 19th and 20th century violin reperatory currently available. To have in a single moderately-priced set the Brahms, Dvorak, Sibelius and Tchaikovsky concerti, along with the Bartok, Brahms, Franck and Shostakovich sonatas, is itself wonderful. But every single performance is among the best in the catalogue. The violinist Oistrakh's intelligence and emotive nature are on display everywhere. The partnership with the pianist RIchter on the two sonata CDs is remarkable. I remember the Brahms and Franck sonata performances from my early youth, and they still are moving and poignant beyond belief. If you have even the slightest curiosity about classical music for the violin and don't mind a little dated sound, do yourself a favor and snap up this set.

A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular? Indeed

this CD never leaves my sight...it's in the car...it's downloaded on my computer at work...it's in the CD player at home. if there were ever a group to take you in a new direction of music, allow Hooverphonic to lead the way. dreamy...otherworldly...hypnotic. little bit of trip-hop...trip-pop...lounge...and vocals that will leave you wanting more after every listen. when i'm listening to this at work, i always get the "who's this? it's really good...wow." trust me...this debut release from this Belgian band is incredible. i have yet to get the other two albums (milk and tree)...a bit scared of tarnishing my view i suppose. nonetheless...you owe it yourself as a fan of music to get this CD and experience what is known as a "New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular".

A No-Brainer for DTS system owners or Steely Dan fans

I don't write reviews often, but after I heard this disc on my system, I was so impressed that I dashed off to write a review to strongly support it (and hopefully spur sales to get more Steely Dan material transferred. Hey, what's in it for me, right?) Seriously though, I am a audio technophile (and, yes, a Steely Dan fan too) and this may be the best sounding material I have ever heard eminating from any stero system I have ever heard. Honestly, it brings chills to my spine and I would only describe my current stereo system as good, but not extraordinary. "Hey Nineteen" is the highlight if you ask me, especially once the bongos get going out of the left surround and the "washboard" out of the right surround. And with the vocals taken care of by the center channel, it adds tremendously to the "normal" stereo separation of the main channels (I swear the horn player is standing right between my left main and surround speakers.) And the separate subwoofer channel blends the low frequencies of the main speakers with the subwoofer output much better than the crossovers produce on my system with stereo discs.
Steely Dan is the perfect material to show off the capabilities of DTS and my expectations for this disc, which were very high, were met. Hope to see more of this. If you have a DTS capable sytem, then buy it. If you are a Steely Dan fan, then get a DTS capable system...

I was overwhelmed by this magnificent singer

Look closely. That certainly doesn't look like your typical classical singer on the cover of this CD. Yet, this is a devastatingly beautiful collection of classical songs with Watson singing his heart out as only he could. There's so much on this album that is emotionally overwhelming--listen to "Core `ngrato" and the rest of this 13 track album.
Watson is at the top of his form and the album should be a tremendous international hit. I remember it as it came out of the box at our local record store and some Watson fans grabbed the premier copies, one crying already just at the cover. That scene intrigued me so much that I had to listen to some sample tracks and I too was overwhelmed by this magnificent singer!
