Unbelievable

After all is said and done, I guess I would probably say that this 1993 recording of 'Einstein on the Beach' is the better recording. It's difficult though, because there are definately things I like more about the original recording, such as the colder recitation of 'These Are the Days' in the first Knee Play. Overall though, this one is probably better. It is about 38 minutes longer, and the ending is in tact, which is important. The ending of the original was good...but perhaps a little abrubt. Anyhow, this album feels more organic, more refined, and this is it's strongest point. The "opera" itself is truly one of the most incredible pieces of music you're ever likely to hear, and with every listen it only grows more so. I wish everybody would give this music a chance. Sadly, most people I've played it for tend to dismiss it immediately. It's difficult, but it's brilliant.

Another Great Voice

Michael Buble has a voice that is effortless and knows how a song should be sung. Paul Anka knew what he was doing when he discovered Michael, because he has a voice that is only his and can't be matched. If you know good music and can recognize a good voice when you hear it, then you know that Michael's voice can't be matched, he knows what music is all about and has the passion for music that is needed. This kind of passion for music is what is needed today. Michael's career will go far.

80's Kings of Pop

Rio is in close competiton with the Duran Duran debut as the best album the group has ever released in my opinion. What keeps it from being their best for me is 100% a personal preference: Rio is a much 'happier' album than the debut. Where the debut travels from ascerbic to moody to near vicious in places [see Girls On Film and Careless Memories], Rio's darker or more melancholic moments [The Chauffeur, Save A Prayer] are fairly sweet and are what amount to love songs.
The fact that Save A Prayer and The Chauffeur are love songs certainly doesn't keep them from being my favorite tracks from Rio along with New Religion. The Chauffeur has become something of a cult classic among Duranies and is a great example of Nick Rhodes creativity and points toward their more artsy side which would subsequently be on major display with Arcadia's So Red The Rose. Save A Prayer is a real sentimental favorite that combines Duran Duran arthouse panache with the epitomy of what a ballad should be.
Duran Duran's second album brings to the table a much warmer collection of songs than the debut, which was certainly intentional. From the opening title track to Hungry Like The Wolf, the image of the album was transformed for Mtv perfectly, as evidenced by the accompanying videos on the remastered version. All in all, Rio is a pristine album. The weakest track is Lonely In Your Nightmare, and this is a single-worthy song mind you. I still juggle between Rio and the '81 debut as to which I truly prefer, because they are mostly equal. It mostly depends on the mood I'm in or wish to be in. Rio is fun jetsetting; the debut just fits my personality a small bit better.

A Nice Addition

Although by no means essential, this CD fills in a small gap in your Jack Bruce collection. Quite frankly, live Jack can be a mixed bag anytime, and this is one of the most consistent live recordings of Jack available. This is not a CD to begin investigating Jack Bruce's career, but rather a suppliment to the I've Always Wanted to Do This album done around 1980. If you have a preference for your Scottish bass players in a live setting, you will find this amongst his best.
