Title: Verve Remixed
Label: Universal
Artist: Various Artists
Rating: 4/5
Customer rating - 4 out of 5

This is what Thievery Corp should have done with their Verve album, but it is good to know they are on it. The weakest track is Strange Fruit. For such a powerful and hauting song, the production should have been better and more fittin for the song. Otherwise definitely a worthy purchase.

Trance for the connoisseur

You will probably already know who Sasha and Digweed are. You may also have one or more from the Northern Exposure series but there should be no doubt that this is the original classic.
This album reveals new intricacies each time I hear it and I have been listening to it with increasing reverance for the last five years.
It is beautifully crafted and flows in a way that few other mixes even begin to emulate. It is nigh impossible to listen to it and tell where one mix begins and ends. Whether or not you recognise the track listing should play no part in your decision to buy this album.
Consider the fact that these DJs were the first to release a commercial (and blockbuster) mix album - viz Renaissance. Allow them another 8 years to perfect the art and you have the culmination of two class DJs working with some of the finest tools in the form of music tracks.
Just buy it. It won't be available forever and you'll wish you had it when it goes the way of Renaissance.
Worst case scenario: if you don't like it, it'll be worth something in a few years and someone who appreciates art will take it off your hands at a profit.

Title: An Evening With John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess
Label: Favored Nations
Artist: John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess
Rating: 5/5
Customer rating - 5 out of 5

I had been trying to obtain this live album for over two years. They sold quickly on John Petrucci's website, and the album was soon deemed "out of print." For those of you who had purchased an obscene number of copies (more than five) during its first printing, thanks freaks. You all made it impossible for shmucks like me to buy one. But thank God for Steve Vai and his Favored Nations label for having the vision to re-release this beauty.
This 2000 performance at the Helen Hayes Performing Arts Center in Nyack, New York by John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess was a truly special one. Being most of these compositions were written in a relatively short period adds to the album's impressive stature. Petrucci effortlessly switching from acoustic to electric, his fretboard precision, and his chosen notes during the improvisations are stunning. The same can be said of Rudess, whose virtuosity on the piano is breathtaking. The years of intense practice and formal training are evident in both men's playing.
My favorite tracks are "Truth" and "State of Grace," but they're all great. The entire album is ear candy for the hardcore music appreciator/afficianado. Highly recommended.
