Live vs. Recorded

For an accoustic band, live is always best. But when you can't hear them live, get the album. This band is incredible. Rich textures, complex rhythms, solid vocals - the total sound is well worth the listen. So get the CD and play it on a system set up to approximate the acoustic experience, close your eyes
and enjoy.

Sounds like a Beautiful Night

I first knew about Sarah several years ago when she released her version of "Dust in the Wind." Then, recently I managed to see a "Harem" TV special, and I was completely sold. So, finally, I got some Sarah in my collection now. This concert is definitely an amazing experience, I will definitely get the DVD. The sound is clear as a bell, and it goes without saying that Sarah's vocals are spine-tingling. I am falling in love with what has been labeled as "cross-over" - pop-ish, yet kinda exotic music with Sarah's incredible soprano soaring above. The perfect example is on "A Beautiful Day" in which she uses both her opera and "straight" vocals to great effect, creating what is to my ears a very unique and refreshing contrast. Sometimes it does go a bit far for my taste into techno/dance territory, but that is forgivable. Thankfully, the material is balanced out with some straight-up opera. I think Sarah has carved a nice little niche for her, in which her diverse talents are really given room to roam. If this concert does not make a fan out of a newcomer to Sarah, nothing will.

A great work for a great time in life

The River... what else can be said about this album that hasn't been told before? This one has it all: pure, joyful rock, dramatic and intense songs, pain, sorrow and a shocking ending. Along with other works by Bruce, this is a concept album and it is about coming of age, about facing responsabilities and having kids, about realizing that there is a limited time in life to accomplish things. If Born to Run was innocent and perhaps a little naive, The River is mature. Life can have its disappoitments, life can start to become a burden, specially when you reach the 30 years of age, but it can also be sooo damn fun when it is summer, when it is hot and friends and girlfriend are there.
So this album seems to be about all these things. And that is why it is a double album. The fist record is fast, strong, joyful, rocker. The second seems to come from another world. In the beginning, you just cant believe that it is the same record, The River. It is thoughtful, dramatic, even a little sad. But there is hope. After reaching "Stolen Car", the great song that closes Side 3, hope and faith begin again to fill your heart, and even that there is a price to pay for growing up, even if many men have fallen away to that price, in the end you can always realize that there is happiness in life and in loving the one you're with.
If you like good rock and roll, but also believe in friendship, love, drama and like to have fun... this one is for you. Bruce ROCKS!!!
