No regrets

I have several recordings of this piece, including the classic Karajan recordings. I bought this version on a whim in order to have a digital version of the piece. I am incredibly glad I did. This is by far my favorite version. No buyer's remorse here. Highly recommended.

Thanks

To those of you interested in this CD in lieu of finding the "songs with lyrics" in the movie ICE AGE, got bad news for you. They are NOT here! I really do hate it when a soundtrack is put out for a movie and they don't include the best or features songs in the movie. Anyway, the song that pretty much everyone wants when Manny, Sid, Diego and the baby are together and walking towards Half Peak is called "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. It is on their latest album "When I Woke". Put Rusted Root in the Amazon search engine and you should find it. Hope this helps those looking for this song.

Despite A Few Warts Still One Of The Best

For many Bernstein's CBS (now Sony) Mahler recordings were their first introduction to the works. Luckily the exuberance and spirit that Bernstein brought to these performances made instant converts. He loved and identified with the music and was able to bring that across to the listener. He still does.
Like any set there are a few warts. The opening trumpet in the 5th should have been redone. The sound in some of the works while not modern clean digital are more than acceptable. Any warts are swept away though by Bernstein in a blink of an eye.Even though I have known these recordings for decades hearing them afresh as a group still gives one the feeling of hearing them for the first time. I was pleasently surprised by the 4th which I had rarely listened to. Bernstein brings a light hand to this gem and Grist, unlike others, keeps it simple without the hamming up of other soloists. The 3rd still remains one of the finest around while the 8th is pure over the top but Bernstein makes it work. If these recodings were on wax cylinders they would be worth every cent. Here in this set they come for relatively few cents in a nice package. Minimal notes (Bernstein's famous Mahler essay) but complete texts and translations. Still a classic, warts and all.
