Signs Of Slowing Down...

This album shows signs of slowing down for the Backstreet Boys in the sales and charts department. This album sold 8 million which isn't bad if you don't compare it to their other albums. This album features "Shape Of My Heart" Their only top 40 hit which hit 12, "The Call" hit a disappointing 52 and that is it. The album fell out of the top 40 album charts in 15 weeks and was quickly gone. This album shows their weaknesses and now in a changing music scene it will be even harder to stay on top.

Best Album since their Debut in 1981!

I've been a fan since 1982, and bought all their albums along the way. I've discovered all sorts of other music too over the years, so am not an exclusive Duranie by a long stretch. Was so happy that the band reunited the original line-up, and have watched the progress over the past 3 years with interest (went to gigs, listened to advanced samples, etc.).

Anyway, this is their most solid album in over 20 years. There is no filler - something I am afraid the band has been guilty of since "Big Thing". I want to stress though that that is not just a back-handed compliment. These are their best written and played songs in ages, and the album works really well as a set.

Clearly Andy and Roger were a big part of the essence of the band, musically and as personalities. How the band writes songs - mainly jamming on ideas in the studio, as opposed to someone turning up with "their song" - relies on the diverse musically backgrounds and interests of each member.

For me, the highlights on the album are "Astronaut" - a ridiculously catchy pop gem (blending electo and acoustic intruments, and bouncy beat) that is the most original song I've heard in the pop format since Outkast's "Hey Ya", and "Point of No Return" - smooth with pointed edges, a little jazzy, with overtones of their early eighties sound, but at the same time fresh and contemporary, with lyrics that touch current issues (post 9/11 world). I also love the next single "What Happens Tomorrow" a mid-tempo power ballad with loads of hooks, big choruses, and a nice chunky guitar line (and nice falsetto harmonies by Andy Taylor). A vocal (and lyrical) highlight, and other top song, is the closer, "Still Breathing" which features Simon singing a middle-eastern style melody over a restrained musical accompaniment built around a simple guitar motif. There are some sexy funky workouts - "Bedroom Toys" (risque!), "Taste the Summer", and the disco-era Stones-like "Nice". "One of Those Days" pushes the musical envelop a little in Duran terms, and actually reminds me a little of Blur from a few years ago. That's a good thing.

I can't wait for their next tour, will be fun to hear several of these new songs live. They've really become a very solid live band, it is amazing what maturity, better technology and a good attitude will bring - we've all seen dud Duran performances from 1984 onwards. There is a limited edition CD/DVD version available too - I got both regular CD and the L.E. version. The DVD is great - backstage documentary and live footage from their short 2004 UK tour.

BORN TO DO IT RIGHT!!!

This is a great album. I liked "Fill Me In" when I heard the single so I bought the album (less than 2 weeks ago). It was well worth it. Since then, I must have listened to it over 20 times. Craig David has a different sound that many people will find enjoyable. My favorite songs are "Rendezvous", "7 Days", "Can't Be Messing 'round", "Follow Me", "Walking Away", etc....I might as well say that all the songs are my favorites. I fell in love with his CD even more when I saw him at SummerStage in Central Park last week. He is even better live; even if you don't dance, you will be bopping your head to the songs. If there were a 10 star rating this review would have it. ** Anyone who buys this CD will enjoy it tremendously, not only for his terrific vocals but also for his creativeness.
