You Must Get This CD !

If you thought Praise The Fallen was good, then Empires will blow you away. Its got the same hard electronic beat to it, but now, it is even louder and faster which gives it a new uplifting effect. You also have to listen to it with the volume pumped up real high because you will miss out on the background beats that give it the exact measurment of perfect techno/thrash/industrial. If the Bank (gothic club in NY) were to ever reopen, they would open up with this CD.

Great songs from not-so-great musicals

I was given this for my birthday, along with Unsung Sondheim, my favorite composer. I was excited, and a little bit skeptical because I've NEVER heard of these musicals. Once I started though, I was hooked. I want sheet music to so many, they're fun to sing along to, or just to listen to they great singer/actresses they got. My personal favorites are Smile, Sherry, Ragtime Romeo, and Silverware. I recommend this for all Broadway Babies and theatre buffs like me!

An All-Time Favorite

I bought the album when it was first reviewed in Rolling Stone back in the late 80's. Thank you RS, for delivering this music to my ears. Boomtown has remained on my All-Time Favorites List ever since. I have a "thing" for songs about the dark side of life(Steely Dan being another group I put in this catagory) and Boomtown brings it in spades. "Swallowed By The Cracks" tells of 3 friends who have great dreams of their future("I would coreograph, Eileen she would act, while Steve was a writer") only to be "swallowed by the cracks". The refrain is great to sing along to. Everything about this album is at top form; the singing, lyrics and instrumentation. Buy it, borrow it or rip it, just DO IT!

I liked it but...

As a whole, The songs on Katy Lied aren't as enjoyable, nor do they pack quite the punch of Countdown to Ecstasy, my favorite Dan Album.
The memory of Steely Dan the touring band lingers in the past as Becker/Fagen delve deeper into Jazz and lite-pop. Don't get me wrong, there's still some decent moments, as Donald Fagen is in Top form.
The amazing opener "Black friday" is on par with "Bodhisattva" in my book. "Everyone's gone to the movies" never fails to delight. "Any world that I'm welcome to" is exceptionally strong. "Rose Darling" has a perfect friday afternoon/going away feel.
On the downside I never cared for "Your gold teeth part 2". It sounds kind of corny and can't hold a candle to the original. "Throw backs the little ones" comes and goes as filler.
My father recently passed away. He was a huge Steely Dan fan and got me into them. I remember vividly hearing Countdown to Ecstasy on his stereo and it blew me away. Katy Lied was their second album I got the chance to hear, and I was disappointed at first, expecting another Countdown to Ecstasy, it's nowhere near that album (But then again, what is?)
