An extraordinary singer

How come such great performances be released on CD at this price? I think I could have given it a higher rating if I could. This CD is priceless! I am so fortunate in discovering and buying this quality CD.
I now realize why some people keep calling Russell Watson "the people's tenor" and praising his "high notes". Listening to this CD, you will hear a great tenor voice, and at a concert, heard his great voice even without the aid of a microphone. Russell Watson is a great tenor and you will note how he easily secures the high notes.
He is an extraordinary singer who is rendering superb versions of the old-time favorites and introducing classical music to the general public. He is a phenomenon!

What Kind Of Music?

My sister and I were discussing this CD and could not determine what kind of music Brian Setzer has made this season brighter with...

Is it rockabilly? Big band? What?

The lyrics in this Christmas special argue that it's a form popularized in the mid-to-late 50s. It represents a transition into the rock and roll classic era, no question, but so many of those artists had by then abandoned the big band sound.

Anyway, it would not be Christmas without the leering allusions of this funny, lively album. The production value is pure Cinerama, and you won't be bored with the adaptations. The only cut I had a too-hard time with was the Nutcracker variations; somehow they reminded me too much of the Spike Jones version which, by comparison, sounded better.

"Tis the season."

Title: Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane
Label: Ojc
Artist: Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane
Rating: 5/5
Customer rating - 5 out of 5

This album is a showcase of Coltrane's and Monk's genius. Because they were both assigned to different labels at the time of this recording, (1957), it was thought that nothing of their partnership had been recorded. But then this album appeared in 1961 and has been acclaimed as among the greatest achievements in each man's career. 3 of the tracks, "Ruby, my dear", "Trinkle Tinkle" and "Nutty" feature them in a quartet setting, while "Off Minor" and Epistrophy" are alternate recordings of their septet. "Functional" is Monk playing solo, an alternate take of his greatest ever blues solo. The booklet includes a 3 page essay by Ira Gitler and a couple of photos. This is an album that no jazz lover should be without.

Must Have for Irish Fiddle

If you really want to get down to the nuts & bolts of what traditional Irish music is - this album is a must have. While it isn't an audiophiles dream, it is one of the most exciting recordings a fan of Irish fiddle could hope for. Some tracks are marred by insensitive studio piano players who cared little for Irish music, others are backed up well. Although these tracks have been picked over for scratches & pops, many tracks are still scratchy & fuzzy. All this aside, the fiddle playing is brilliant & his music is a perfect example of the Sligo style. This album also includes the most informative liner notes I've ever seen, I would pay the price of the CD for the booklet alone.
