Overlooked Masterpiece

Dangerous is arguably Michael Jackson's most ambitious effort to date. There are no weak tracks on this album. The production is superb as on all the MJ's recordings, but the sound is completely different than on the previous albums. The rhythms and grooves on this album are really fantastic and they hold a strong grip on the album from the beginning to the very end.
The overall mood on this album is darker than on its predecessors. There are a few exceptions, though, such as "Keep The Faith". It's a real stand-out track with it's groovy uplifting feel. Otherwise the song doesn't quite fit in the album's style, but that's not a bad thing in this case.
The other tracks that stand out are the hauntingly beautiful "Who Is It", the groovy songs "She Drives Me Wild", "In The Closet" and "Dangerous", the touching masterpiece "Gone Too Soon" as well as the widely recognized "Remember The Time", "Heal The World" and "Will You Be There". These are some of the best songs Jackson has ever written.
There are a lot of hit singles on Dangerous, but with its near 80 minute length and ambitiously epic atmosphere it's not the kind of album I would recommend for just anyone. However, if you're not afraid to throw yourself in a mysterious world of groovy rhythms and beautiful melodies, by all means get it now. If you're a MJ fan, you should definitely buy this album right now.

Metheny fans might check this one out.

This album is a solid effort from Brian Hughes. It has some wonderful performances on it, but I think that Brian was still trying to find himself at this point. The similarity to Pat Metheny is too close. I must say that I haven't heard anyone come that close to Metheny, but he's not Metheny. I think that he learned this later. The similarity to Metheny goes beyond Hughes' playing. The arrangements are also similar (no mean feat for those who know Metheny's work) and even the instrumentation is about the same, right down to the cymbal sound. As far as the "rap" song goes; I had the CD on one day while my neice was over (her being a teen rap-a-holic) and that tune came on and she just started laughing. It could never be considered rap. All the same I do think that the CD is worth checking out.

An alternative to this

Bruce's live album from 1989 containing 14 tracks on one CD might be a better buy, but difficult to find. The sound is "electric" like that on the "Stealing Fire" LP.
