in some respects superior to the original broadway cast

i have both the broadway '73 and london '75 recordings. for my money, jean simmons (london) outdoes glynis johns. but len cariou (broadway)sings circles around mr. ackland. hermione gingold's performance actually improves with age. and the london petra ("the miller's son") is awesome. i think the opening is perfection; but elsewhere some of the ensemble numbers do have the odd tempo now and then. i know this is not practical advice, but the best solution would be to splice bits from both cd's to create your perfect recording.

A Psychological Thriller...

Track one grabs your attention, followed by three lame tracks so you can appreciate when it picks up in track five and builds up to tracks nine, ten, and eleven which get fairly radical... This CD needs to be listened to in whole without interruption, it's not for running errands around the neighborhood. Except for track three, as you listen to it more it gets even better... A friend told me that one of the tracks is on an MTV video. Thank God I don't watch MTV, that would have ruined this CD for me...

Unbelievably moving

In an era when it becomes increasingly hard to find an emotional connection to the new "music" that arises, I was gratified to channel surf and hear this voice. On a cable program, I began to hear Josh Groban singing the theme from one of my all-time favorite movies, Cinema Paradiso. It was a rare moment where I just stood there - frozen. Not since Aretha Franklin surprised everyone a few years back and sang from Turandot on the Grammy's had I felt so overcome by the power of music. To long to have that feeling more is a sad telling on what the industry keeps churning out. But, here was another taste of what the power of music can do. They then played another cut, To Where You Are, and I just began to weep. Maybe the music was the sledgehammer that finally beat down the wall to the collective sorrows that can no longer be ignored by any of us. But, weep I did, and I felt blessed that I had somehow clicked on the tube at just that moment. I bought this CD the next day and consider it one of my greatest finds. I pray that this 20 year old will remain pure to his craft and that the industry will be kind.

DMB Comparisons

Now I must admit that when I read Rickey Wright's review of "Room for Squares" I cheered to myself when I saw that he compared some of John Mayer's singing styles to Dave Matthews Band. I had made that some comparison more than once, yet no one seemed to agree with me. But, in the defense of all DMB fans, to compare one to the other does not make one lesser. In fact, Mayer's style is one of the reasons I like him so much. Also correct is that honesty is not something often heard on the radio waves lately. Mayer is one of few and I'm glad that people like Wright do not discourage him in the slightest. "Room for Squares" is definately an album that will stay in the CD player for quite some time.
