Worth the Wait

Much-anticipated albums have a way of disappointing their audience once they finally arrive. High expectations give way to a mild or a severe letdown. "Tanto Tempo" is an exception to that general rule. A lot of people were looking forward to this album, but, if anything, we got more than we hoped for. Bebel Gilberto manages to mix samba, bossa, light jazz, and contemporary pop influences gracefully to create a gorgeous album that sounds thoroughly modern, but with enough respect for tradition that it is unlikely to offend the Rio purists.
Every cut is obviously very carefully thought through. She obviously didn't just enter the studio and start playing. The attention to mood and detail is such that each track fully realizes a life of its own, the result being that the more one listens to this CD, the better it gets.
This may well end up being Brazilian music's biggest North American hit since her father, Joao, and Stan Getz topped the charts in the 60's. It also just might become one of those ultimate summer albums that never quite wears out its welcome. A lovely, cool breeze of a CD.

Such grooviness as you've never imagined...

My new favorite CD. It's positively to die for, especially if you like eerie, mood-setting music.

Pure freshness

the first mix cd from sequence records (a sub-label of ultra records), dan the automator puts together an eclectic mix of hip-hop, rock, and tons of tracks he's produced to create a wonderful mix cd. the tracklisting features automator's work on deltron 3030, an air remix, gorillaz, and even last year's disappointment lovage. interspersed is also some rock tracks from tortoise and doves, which blend near perfectly in between hip-hop seletions. he also brings along his good friends brand nubian, dilated peoples, and masta ace to make sure this mix set stays with the hip-hop. a bit of a disappointment is learning that 'additional scratch production thanks to kid koala' on the inside, which kind of detracts from his work. also, at times the mixing is off or too cluttered to be smooth enough to flow, but sometimes the tracks blend so well that you forget there is a transition. and that's hard with hip-hop as any hip-hop dj will tell you. much better release from dan this year, and does give hope to the sequence records label in the future. 6 out of 10.
