Fun, relaxed music

This doesn't sound at all like by-the-numbers electronica. It's got some fresh-sounding synths, and it's also got some great acoustic sounds in the mix, like the guitar line in "All I Need", the easy-listening-style horn lead on "Ce Matin La" (which isn't a criticism--here it works!), and what sounds like real live drums on many of the songs (along with low-key wood blocks, maracas, and other interesting percussion). Some of the songs veers toward the ambient, like the terrific opener "La Femme D'Argent", while other tracks have closer to a relaxed pop sound, like the vocoder-driven "Kelly Watch the Stars" and "Remember". Beth Hirsch's vocals on "All I Need" and "You Make It Easy" are definitely another attraction.
If you want your electronica to serve up driving dance beats, look elsewhere. This is slower-tempo lazy day music. But it's terrific music to just listen to--it's good as background music, but it also definitely rewards closer listening with headphones.

Not as good as SFTWC, but still a great album

Songs From The West Coast was one of the best Elton John albums I've heard. Every single song on that album just memorized me. And I couldn't wait to hear the next album. But I thought to myself "The albums he records in the future just might never be better than this one". And after hearing Peachtree Road, I was right...but not by far. This album is still very good and it was worth the wait.

1. Weight of the World - Such a sad song to open the album with. But the lyrics are very deep and touching. This song is a real tear jerker. One of the many on this album. A-

2.Porch Swing In Tupelo - I was intrigued by the title of this track alone. And then when I heard the chorus, I was blown away. A great song about memories and growing up. Another tear jerker here. A

3.Answer In The Sky - The first time I heard this song on the radio, I immediatly was attracted to it. Definitly a song just for elton, and definitly radio material. This song is an anthem. A

4.Turn The Lights Out When You Leave - This is my favorite song on the album. It's got a slow country beat. And although the lyrics are optimistic about not being sad that you're loved one is leaving you. The music just makes it depressing. And the chorus is very tongue in cheek, and will be stuck in your head if you turn the cd off after hearing this track. A+

5.My Elusive Drug - The lyrics to the song are very truthful and have deep meaning. But the whole song just doesn't go that well together in my mind. Still pretty good though. B

6.They Call Her The Cat - This song doesn't fit the album at all. It's the only upbeat song. But who doesn't like an upbeat Elton song? This one is just as good. Catchy and clever. But it doesn't fit the album. B+

7.Freaks In Love - What is it with all these songs I can relate to? I think everyone could relate to this song at one point. Everyone has a relationship like this sometimes. But this is a song about standing up and showing your pride. Brilliant. A-

8.All That I'm Allowed - This song sounds like Elton is preaching to us about how he thankful for all that he has in his life. And he delivers it in a great and catchy way. Another favorite. A+

9.I Stop And I Breathe - A song about taking serious things in and being able to handle them. Everyone gets a shock in their life that they can't believe happened to them. And this song perfectly describes what that feeling is like. A-

10.Too Many Tears - A bit more faster than I thought it'd be from reading the title. Don't get me wrong. It aint a rock song. But it's mid tempo. And he sings the verses with a bit of speed. But this is another preaching song. Very well done again. The backround vocals are nice as well. A-

11.It's Getting Dark In Here - Another song that I was intrigued by the title. And yet again another song all of us can relate to when we get really depressed in our lives. Great song to listen to if you just want look out the window and feel that dreadful feeling of lonliness. But deep down you know you love those kinds of songs. A

12.I Can't Keep This From You - Not really the best song to end the album with. But the music is beautiful. With gospel organs, and lots of back up singers. A typical love song though. Anyone can sing this song really. But Elton does it well. Another catchy tune that has tongue in cheek lyrics. But still a beautiful song. A-

Overall grade: A-
Great album from a legendery singer. Definitly worth getting. I don't think it's possible for him to make a bad album. And I will always think it's IMPOSSIBLE for him to make a better album than Songs From The West Coast. :)

THE REAL DEAL

Being a "critic" of female vocalists since the age of 3 I have loved them all - Barbara, Whitney, Mariah and Celine but Christina has risen to the challenge and all I can say is MOVE OVER LADIES! The sheer power of this young womans voice is astounding! It comes from her toes! She sings her songs with such feeling that you stop singing with her to listen. I say the GRAMMY better go to Christina Agulera. Tack 3 is my favorite and so are all the others. You will quickly appreciate this fantastic album.
