AH-EEEEIY!!!

The trick Ann Savoy has managed with this album is to both honor the traditions of the rich Cajun music heritage AND give some new twists and perspectives via perfect choices of non-Cajun artists to perform the songs. Whether John Fogerty or Richard Thompson or Linda Ronstadt, the singers manage to get inside the songs -- even though they're all in French, which is the ONLY way this material can be sung. And the mix of lively two-steps, stately waltzes and sad ballads covers the whole breadth of Cajun material and life. This is the perfect introduction to the music and culture for anyone even remotely curious, but also a strong addition to collections of devoted Cajun aficianados.

The Christmas Story in Music

More acting than music, this is more of a production than what I generally want from a Christmas CD. In fact, to me the pageantry overwhelms and diminishes the beauty of the music. But, Crawford fans will enjoy the Webber-like soaring crescendos and hanging whispers that add (melo)drama to well-known classics.

Can A Show Be Unbelievably Touching, Moving, Sexy and Funny?

The answer is, "The Full Monty" can. I got this cd before I saw the show, and after listening to it, wasn't really impressed that much. I was actually kind of regretting paying (...) for my ticket. But after seeing the show live, this is one of my favorite cds. "The Full Monty" is a show that you must see live in order to appreciate its brilliance. The story is of course funny, and of course sexy. But what some people don't see, is that behind the strippers, and the g-strings, and the nudity, "The Full Monty" is about unconditional love, and the lengths that people will go to to keep a family together. "The Full Monty" was one of the most touching musicals in Broadway history. There were several parts when I teared up, and one particulare scene where I brokedown crying. "The Full Monty" is brilliant!

Elton's Songs

This self-titled album was Elton John's second and breakthrough release in America. Mr. John and Bernie Taupin had been collaborating for a few years, but they really started to gel as a team on this release. The album has almost a baroque sound to it with alot of strings, harpsicords and airy syntheseisers. Of course everyone knows the megahit "Your Song", but the album contains others that would become Elton John classics. "Sixty Years On" is a stirring lament about growing old, "The Greatest Discovery" is a sweet ode to the birth of a brother, while "The King Must Die" ends the album in dark epic fashion. "I Need You To Turn To" & "First Episode At Hienton" carry on in the somber-like tone. The album is dominated by, but not regulated to classical stylings. "No Shoestrings On Louise" has a country twang, "The Cage" is a funky rocker, while both "Take Me To The Pilot" & "The Border Song" have gospel influences (Aretha Franklin had a big hit with "Border"). While not as radio-friendly as future Elton John releases, this album has an experimental feel and is worth repeat listenings.
