With pleasure...

It`s a pleasure to your ears, it`s a pleasure to your mind, it`s an inspiration to your soul. It slightly resembles good-old OREGON, cello-tabla-piano-sax-guitar. Pure acoustics, great album! ECM is ECM and Manfred Eicher is Manfred Eicher...

suprisingly good.

...but ought to give it a listen. I'm a big fan of Waits' gritty skid row sensibility and found sounds, and with any luck those familiar only with Hammond's blues will develop an appreciation of Waits' raw, gristle-and-veins poetry.
I'm particularly fond of Jockey full of Bourbon, which in the Waits original reminds me of sitting on 3rd street in downtown L.A. at 5AM, listening to a tinny radio in a piece of crap '82 chrysler while a buddy called Bock-A-Looch scores a packet of Mexican Brown... only Hammond's lyrics are much more understandable. Waits captures the atmosphere, Hammond gives it to the listener.

Title: Songs from Ragtime - The Musical (1996 Concept Album)

A great concept album

This is the concept album preceding the Original Cast Recording made once Ragtime had made it to Broadway.
The music throughout is dramatic and stirring, and the performances from the stellar cast are wonderful. Additionally, you get the song The Show Biz, which was cut from the show later on. I have heard the Original Cast Recording a couple of times, but prefer this more concise version. The combination of the final three tracks on this recording have great power, which is somewhat lost on the full recording. Also on this version, Camille Saviola appears as Emma Goldman. On the cast recording, she is replaced by Judy Kaye.
Heading the great cast are Brian Stokes Mitchell, Marin Mazzie, and Audra McDonald. Each offers up a heartfelt, moving performance, and each have highlights of the recording. A fine ensemble piece comes in the shape of Till We Reach That Day, sung at the funeral of Audra McDonald's character, Sarah.
Other reviews of this album are somewhat mixed, but this is a great recording of a work-in-progress. I don't know what else I can say to sell it to you, but just believe that this is good stuff.
