Title: Erotica
Label: Maverick
Artist: Madonna
Rating: 5/5
Customer rating - 5 out of 5

Erotica is the type of album that people will credit in about 10 more years as being ground breaking, thought provoking and once in a lifetime example of an artist not caring about anything but ART. People are already saying how the "Sex" book (which came out the same week as this album) as demolishing sexual phobias and changing the world for women in music. It is sad pop culture usually has delayed reactions to brilliance.
Madonna is the first POP star to really say something in her music. She is the first to say "f%*ck u - I am not sorry and u will still be interested in me." The whole world was and tore her apart for it. This album turns the tables on the narrow-minded saying -- take a look at you! you are the real demons and you can't even face it! She is the first POP star to ever deal with sexuality - especially homosexuality -- in such a raw way that it scared people -- even gay people. It was in ur face and unapologetic -- that is what we hate at the time but praise later. Now don't be confused she wasn't doing what trite artists like Eminem do -- Eminem hates on people (especially the people that the mainstream don't like) and his peers love that cuz he is a non-threatening, blonde hair/blue-eyed white boy who wins Grammys for it!!! Madonna was the polar opposite-- she challenged the mainstream and no one, especially women, are allowed to do that and not suffer for it. That is the theme of this entire album (and the entire era of that part of her career) if u don't challenge what u passionately don't agree with then u will always be a pawn for the mainstream's inconsistencies.
Musically this album was ahead of it's time. I can listen to Secret Garden, Bad Girl, or Rain and those songs still sound fresh today. It is a timeless album. Madonna dropped all of her previous produced and tried something completely left field with a message.
Lyrically this album was absolutely brilliant for pop music:
the boots have comeand trampled on me and I'm still alive'Cause the sun has kissed me,and caressed meAnd I'm strong, and there's a chance that I will grow
What more do you want? These lyrics remind you of Meshell Ndegochello -- an artist that would come out 2 years later. The lyrics were introspective and at times fun -- but even the fun songs like Erotica, Bye Bye Baby & Did You Do It were still eerie in a haunting way.
The effects of probably one of the most talked about albums in pop music showed all through the 90's. Like in Janet Jackson's next two albums (janet. & Velvet Rope) reeked of sexuality, especially gay, which was an obvious take off Madonna from an artist who used to wear all black and whisper. Now you have half of these young female artist who taking off their clothes -- they obviously missed the whole point! Once Madonna knocked the door down record execs realized this was a new outlet but they unfortunately perverted it, like everything else.
Overall this is an excellent album that if you don't own or if you heard in '92 and refused to listen to it cuz of what the media told you -- you need to pick it up again (the explicit version) and let Madonna take you on her most persecuted but original reinvention.

Title: On the 6
Label: Sony
Artist: Jennifer Lopez
Rating: 4/5

A nicely varied selection of songs

Because Jennifer Lopez is such a media personality, I think it's difficult to put aside the tabloid headlines and simply evaluate her musical output. But you know what? "On the 6" is a pretty good CD. On this disc, Lopez blends Latin, disco, pop, and other elements for a largely satisfying whole.
The CD offers a nice mix of mellow and high energy numbers. "Should've Never" is enhanced by both a sensuous spoken-word bit as well as some erotic moaning. "Waiting for Tonight" is a good disco number that appears in two versions: English and Spanish (the latter titled "Una Noche Mas"). Another song that appears in two versions is "No me Ames," an excellent duet with Marc Anthony. With this song, both versions are in Spanish; the difference is that the first song has a salsa flavor (heavy on horns and percussion), while the second is a more laid-back ballad version. Also enjoyable is the mellow, romantic "Talk about Us."
Lopez proves herself an effective vocalist on the CD, and holds her own in her duet with the amazing Anthony. Yes, as a whole "On the 6" may just sound a bit too "slick" and commercial, but if you suspend whatever prejudices you might have, you just might enjoy it. I did.

Ladies and Gentleman...Mr. John Frusciante

There's no doubt that John Frusciante could keep coming out with albums and keep everyone and anyone happy. His basis is not to be complicated, but to be expressive. Everyone of his albums is a true expression of John at his currents state of mind. This is another great album with more of John being great. It still has the same general feeling of his recent albums but a different approach to those feelings. I'd recommend it to anyone. John is a pure musician
