Magical Magic Flute

Solti's Decca set eclipses the Klemperer (1964) set. Here is my comparision
Conductor: Advantage: DECCA! Both did a great job. But Solti confers a touch of lightness that Klemperer lacks. Klemperer's is a heavier performance and slower too. Solti's is exciting. What he did with the overture is nothing short of stunning. His papageno ... papagena is hilarious - light, quick, witty and charming. While Klemperer's is too slow for any impact. Solti's Queen of the Night is also rightly paced. Klemperer's is also fabulous but a shade that slow.
Queen of the Night: Advantage: DECCA! Lucia Popp became famous because of the Queen of the Night. She is spectacular and irreplaceable. Firm, Authoritative, accurate. Her high F's sung magnificently and effortlessly. But Sumi Jo is even more spectacular (no doubt among the finest on disc - definitely better than Roberta Peters or Deutokom). Her high F's are just a shade less securely sung than Popp's high F's. In terms of dexterity, Sumi Jo wins Popp. However, Popp loses control and goes a little off intonation and misses a few notes in the stratosphere. Sumi Jo, on the other hand, has perfect control in the stratosphere - intonation is perfect and all notes are intact. So overall, I would rate Sumi Jo higher.
Pamina: Advantage: EVEN. Ziesek's performance is more intelligent and more moving. Her performance is wonderful and has more emotions in it. If only she had Janowitz voice. Janowitz sings a little blandly by comparison but her voice is more beautiful. So they even out.
Tamino: Advantage: DECCA! Heilmann is just that shade better than Gedda.
Papageno: Advantage: DECCA. Decca's papageno has that comic element missing in the Klemperer set.
Three Ladies: Advantage: EMI! Can anyone beat Schwarzkopf, Ludwig and Hoffgen in a MINOR role???? But then, The Decca has that lightness that the EMI lacks.
Sound: Advantage: DECCA! Although the Klemperer stereo holds up and sounds just fine, better than fine-it sounds great, the Solti recording is briliant in its digital power.
Discs: Advantange: EMI or DECCA depending on your preference. The EMI doesn't have the dialogue. So it lacks completeness. on the other hand, the Solti's is set up so that you can't program out the dialogue which is annoying for those who don't like dialogue.
I recommend both, but place the DECCA set ahead of the EMI set. If you have the means, buy both. If not, the DECCA would be the best. I personally like both of the them and listen to both all the time.
Forget the Bohm set (ok, ok, ok, let's not be too harsh - buy it as a 3rd or 4th set). No doubt Wunderlich is peerless as Tamino. But Roberta Peters is hopeless as Queen of the Night. the conducting is wonderful. But any magic flute without a proper Queen of Night is a disappointment.

A true Bowie classic.

This is a classic album, it is as good as anything he did in the seventies. It is interesting when bowie makes a concept album he never hits a wrong note, its only when he submits to market pressures is when his manna turned sour.Positivesa number of really good songs.Voyeur of utter destruction is a sharp insight into the media age, it satirises those who are enthusiastically drawn to the misery and suffering they see played out on their TV screens and read about in newspapers (well thats what i thought at first) now i see it as the boasts of some kind of sensate, who is a voyager in human experience, seeking ever new perversions and challenges, the lyrics go "research has pierced all extremes of my sex, call it a day call it a day", which suggests this individual is only living his life so he can study himself as he experiences something, very arty, one of my fav tracks on the album. It contains great lyrics, with sly puns eg "for the reeking flesh is as romantic as hell".I have not been to oxford town contains the confessions of a thief in prison. The title suggested to me possibly more of bowies famous skill at using layered multiple themes and metaphors.Thru these architects eyes is about the thief character explaining plaintively why he does what he does "to leave the job when you you know the moneys from day to die", i love this great song, wow apart from the segues there isnt a bad song on this album.
We prick you is a fast drum beat which is very good to listen to, not sure what its about though.Im deranged boasts a wonderful techno paranoia sound that is seriously good and haunting blurry self effasive lyrics. Im deranged is one of the gems on the album.Strangers when we meet is the most easily absorbed (and commercial?) song on the album, but forgiven for that its a great track, i love it.The title track is an uplifting almost symphonic piece, with impressively uplifting changes in tempo and lyrics. No control ties in well with "im deranged", it is a funky little number with lots of strange fatalistic insights eg "every single moves uncertain" and "sit tight in your corner, dont tell god your plans".The hearts filthy lesson is a great song, full of atmospheric vocals and avenging drums, snippets of meanness cruelty and self obsession reign throughout, this song is about a suicide cult were the leader encourages her devotees to experience the "fantastic death abyss". This brilliantly creepy and haunting song i never tire of listening to. Again double meanings such as "O Ramona , if there was only something between us...other than our clothes.." which seems to suggest he wants a relationship with Ramona but actually means he is afraid of her and wants to escape from her presence. Brilliant.Small Plot Of land is an eerie uplifting mostly instrumental song that is one of the best on the album, the tempo builds until it becomes almost hypnotic and menacing.
NegativesThough innovative and funny, the numerous segues make the album more prone to dating and being fixed in its time and within the borders of its themes, these are excellent songs regardless which can stand alone. I do like the segue baby grace (a horrid cassette) though, and algeria touchshriek.
Like all Bowie works i would advise you listen a few times and let the music sink in a bit, Bowies music is more sophisticated than disposable pop detritus or false rock regurgita and so deserves this. If you pass this baby down, you dont know what your missing.

AWSOME CHARLOTTE!!!!!

This cd is one of the best I have owned yet. Charlotte brings forth yet another brilliant performance. She brings out the brilliance and integrity of her voice, and spreads her wings to new levels. She has captured the hearts of many with her vocals, and now that she is turning into a young woman, I am sure she is turning a few heads of young boys also. If you have the means to get this cd, I HIGHLY recomend it!

THis is a good box set. So if you're a true Michael Jackson fan it's his best!! Trust me!! If you're not hopefully you can appreciate good music and give it a shot..Again for all the Michael Jackson Bashers get a life. I'm positive the "Knuckleheads", on here Michael Jackson bashing are the main weirdo's that need to boost themselves up by making unknown comments about a man they've never even met. It's tired haters. Stop hating. Your time is up!!
