Title: The Very Best Of Cher
Label: Rhino Records

Not quite ALL of her "very best", but it still rocks

I agree with the previous reviewer in that a two-disc set would have been more appropriate for "the very best of Cher." After all, the woman has been making music for four decades. And there are some big hits missing here. I'm a little surprised that "The Way Of Love," "Love And Understanding" and "We All Sleep Alone" - all top 20 hits which were included on IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME: CHER'S GREATEST HITS - didn't make it to this collection, while other songs which failed to hit the top 40 (i.e. "One By One") or failed to chart altogether (i.e. "All Or Nothing") did. I also would have liked more Sonny & Cher material, although I appreciate the fact that this collection included more than one S&C song (this one has both "I Got You Babe" and "The Beat Goes On"; only the former was on IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME) and also includes a few of Cher's '60s solo hits which were also missing from IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME (which had her 1987 remake of "Bang Bang," but not the 1966 original). That said, what is here is first-rate. On every song, Cher proves that she is THE diva. There's no mistaking that voice, whether it's the sweet, sassy, sort of girlish voice on "All I Really Want To Do" (which hit the charts when she was 18) or the older, more soulful, well-cured Cher of "Song For The Lonely." I also like the way this CD is kind of presented thematically - first we get her power-ballad days of the late '80s and early '90s, then on to the late '90s and the new millennium with Cher the dance diva, followed by her 1979 disco smash "Take Me Home" and a remake of an oldie ("The Shoop Shoop Song") followed by the real oldies of Cher's career from the '60s and '70s, ending with "A Different Kind Of Love Song" "dedicated to everyone." It's not ALL of Cher's very best, but it does prove that she can sing anything and sing it well - folk-rock, adult contemporary, power ballads, techno-dance. "Just Like Jesse James" is even more than a little country-flavored, and I'm surprised it wasn't covered for the country market - I think it could have been a big hit. Perhaps someday there will be a TRUE best-of box set encompassing ALL of her hits, but until then, this compilation is a fine overview of the career of the greatest diva ever. Well done Cher (but let me say that I don't believe for a minute that her last tour was her "farewell" tour; she'll be back).

Worst excuse for vocals this side of Yoko Ono

This albumn contains some very average guitar work and is marred by some terrible vocals. I was expecting a lot more considering this guys brilliant work with the Peppers. Very disappointing.

Very Relaxing

First off, I saw the movie in the theater and loved it. The greatest thing about this cd is that it is a mix of happy/mellow tunes and something you can just relax too. I think you will get more out of it if you hear the music all the way through. Another great thing about this CD is that everyone can enjoy it.
