Ziggy Goes To Hollywood

With this record we see Bowie branching out from the more conventional rock sound of Ziggy Startdust. Influenced by American jazz and blues, and the Stones, "Aladdin Sane" contains some wonderful moments. Mick Garson's piano playing is amazing especially on the title track and "Panic In Detroit". "Watch That Man", and "Cracked Actor" are superb rock tunes that sound fresh even to this day. "Drive In Saturday", and "The Prettiest Star" are softer numbers and hint towards the kind of plastic-soul Bowie was to later perfect with "Young Americans". Whether you are a Bowie fan or not you will find something for you on this album.

Solo album or The Call?

Appearances indicate that this is a solo album by The Call's lead man Michael Been, but as the review notes, 2/3's of The Call's lineup plays on this record. "On the verge..." sounds like The Call updated for the modern rock era. In places this record sounds harsh on the ears, and I can't help but wonder what it would sound like if they had a bigger production budget with which to work. Even so, you can't help but appreciate an artist who respects his audience enough to write honest, thought-provoking lyrics. A very solid outing.

Measure is Outstanding!

The Measure of a Man album exceeds my expectations. It's too bad the critics do not see this album for what it is. Sure we all want to hear Clay sing the "oldies" and show off the full power of his voice, but that will come in time. First he needs to establish himself as a pop/rock star and Measure of a Man is the first giant step toward accomplishing that goal. Every track on the album is ear candy. Shine, The Way, Perfect Day and the title song are potential classics. Clay Aiken will be around for a long time and I'm thrilled beyond words with Clay's first album.

Not the best, Not the worst.

Somme of the reviews for this album regard it as something so great that everyone must have it to "Be Cool," however, I find that this disc is appealing to the standard listener of ambient/lounge music. I find that the essence of lounge music is inherent in this album, but I don't find the "Chill-Factor," to be all that high. The album relies too much on moving around from electronic genre to electronic genre rather than having one foundation to focus its strengths on. I agree that the music is great to listen to, however the music by comparison to "Bargrooves: Espace Prive," or the "Ambient Lounge" series is pretty standard stuff.
