You're not gonna see many of these.......

Ok, Grease, great musical, great cast, great vocals, but not the greatest music. Songs like "Hand Jive", You're the One that I Want", and "Grease Lightning" with their fast pace rock'n'roll beat and 50's style vocals really get me going and make me wanna dance and sing. On the other hand, songs like "It's Raining on Prom Night" and "Tears on my Pillow" with their slow, sappy beat and vocals make me wanna fast forward through the song. My personal favorite vocals on the album were those belonging to Sha-Na-Na. There fast pace beat and 50's style vocals take me to another place. My review, one thumb up, one down.

Title: Motown

Artist: Michael McDonald

Not his best but full of magnificent covers.

Michael McDonald is easily one of my favorite singer/musicians of all time. His music holds a special place in my life. McDonald's first solo hit song "I Keep Forgetting We're Not In Love Anymore" and one of his hits with his former band Doobie Brother's hit "Minute By Minute" are my earliest music memories. HIs 1993 album "Blink Of An Eye" is in my opinion, his artistic magnum opus on an overall scale but his other albums are worth checking out.
After the long wait after the magnificent "Blink Of An Eye", McDonald finally returned with "Blue Obsession". While that album was slightly dissapointing at first, it finally grew on me to become another excellent album. His streak of excellent music continues with his latest outing, a collection of 14 Motown classic covers. They are all excellent in my opinion.
I especially love the covers of the classics "Reflections", "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing", and "Too High", giving these timeless oldies a modern touch and modern sound but without sacrificing the magic and timeless quality of the originals. "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" is just brilliant with his husky voice and excellent updating of this great song.
I generally am not much into cover albums personally and prefer more original albums but McDonald's "Motown" album is a really excellent covers album and is in my opinion the best 'covers' album I currently own. While the wait for more original material continues, "Motown" will definately keep me entertained while the original material surfaces sometime not too far in the future.
Newbie fans might be better off getting the "Very Best of" collection to introduce them to his incredible music but for veteran fans like myself, "Motown" is another must-own. While it may not be his best outing, this is the example of how true modern R&B is done right!
