Mariah Is The Best

When I first got this album, I will admit that I didn't care for it too much. Then, I started to really listen to the words, and I found myself listening to it every day since. It took some getting used to, because of it's 80s feel. The ballads are the best. My favorites have to be "Lead The Way," then "Reflections (Care Enough)," and then "Never Too Far". Of the upbeat-dance tracks I really like "All My Life," "If We," "Don't Stop (Funkin' 4 Jamaica)," and "Didn't Mean To Turn You On." I do think that the album could have done without "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life". It is just too long, and does not showcase that beautiful voice that we all know Mariah has. "Loverboy" is also a song I can do without. That's the only reason this review only got 4 stars out of 5. I recommend this album to anyone who is a diehard Mariah fan like myself!

Title: The Wild Party (LaChiusa) (2000 Original Broadway Cast)

Better on CD than in theater

I saw this version of THE WILD PARTY on the first night of previews and was disappointed. The score and cast were strong, but the book and direction (at least then) was lacking. I am sure that they have improved it since then. I bought the CD and have found it very enjoyable. The score is melodic and interesting. The cast is all top-notch, with Toni Collette, Marc Kudish, Brooke Sunny Moriber, and Norm Lewis standing out to me. "Stars" Mandy Patinkin and Eartha Kitt make this one even more popular. This recording shows that the score was never the problem. I highly recommend this CD.
As a side note, there was another musical version of THE WILD PARTY in New York this season. That version, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, played Off-Broadway and also had a very strong score. The CD of that version comes out in July and is also highly recommended. Have fun comparing the two.

Title: Nebraska

Welcome to Bruce's darker side

"Nebraska" is very stark, folksy music. This alblum was recorded on a 4-track, and it shows: the sound quality is pretty bad. You can't use "Nebraska" as background noise, and you probably won't buy it for the music. But if you're willing to pay attention to Springsteen's lyrics, you'll be amazed. This alblum is almost unbearably grim. The title track is about a serial killer. "Johnny 99" got his name from the 99 years he was sentenced to for murder. Music like this, haunting, savage, and poetic, epitomizes what I love most about Bruce Springsteen. The people he describes are somewhere between pathetic and heroic. "Atlantic City" chronicles a loser's descent into crime. The refrain, "Everything dies, baby, that's a fact/ But maybe everything that dies, someday comes back," should be trite, or forced, or over-written, but instead, it resonates with the bleak hopelessness of the world Springsteen has rendered so vividly. Springsteen is a great musician, and this alblum is a big part of the reason why.
