The Thieves of Cool...

Thievery Corporation are right on the money with "Mirror Conspiracy". This cd is like a jungle/jazz/lounge/groove fusion journey of the world. The usual electronic tricks are here, with sampling and distortion. However, the best thing is the wide variety of instrument sounds heard throughout the album, including bongos, panpipes, sitar, flute, sax, horns, maracas, shakers and other percussion instruments. It furthers the worldy feel of the album, as each track takes you to a new place and sound. There is also a large dub/reggae influence, especially noticable on the bassline.
"Treasures" is a great and inviting opening track, with reggae voiceover, smooth bass and jungly sound. "La Monde" is a mellow groove, with wah-wah keyboards, desirable drums and French lyrics. "Indra" is an Indian sounding tune with its opening sitar sound and the samples of Indian chants further in the track. "Lebanese Blonde" has a distinctly Middle Eastern twang and combines with bongos and drum and bass sound to create a smooth sound. "Air Batacuda" and "Samba Tranquille" have a salsa/Spanish feel to them with the use of shakers and maracas. While "Hong Kong Triad" has an oriental feel with spacey sound. The other unmentioned tracks are all goo too. There doesnt seem to be a let down track on the album, as you find yourself able to settle into the groovy, bassy feel that is evident throughout the album.
This album is better than "Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi" (which is also worthy of 4.5*) only because its more likable more quickly. The Thievery Corporation fellas have done a wonderful job of compiling a great cd that is listenable at anytime of the day or night, no matter your mood. The thieves will steal your attention with this journey of cool from around the world...

Title: True Women: Original Soundtrack (1997 Television Mini-Series)

Sprawling look at the Old West from woman's POV

As with many Hallmark mini-series, "True Women" covered a lot of ground -- maybe too much -- but was entertaining and informative, covering events in U.S. history from the female point-of-view for a change. Dana Delany excels playing strong characters and Sarah McClure is one of her best roles ever. All the parts were well-cast; even small parts, such as Irene Bedard's Toby, were played by wonderful actors. Michael Greyeyes, as Tarantula, was particularly memorable in a small role. I would have given "True Women" five stars if only the last hour hadn't hurdled over events at lightspeed. I still recommend it to anyone interested in revisiting history in an intelligent, visually exciting way.

Not Air's Best - But Already Very Good

Air's first album 'Moon Safari' is the least brilliant of the band's albums so far.
Still, it is a very worthwile buy.
Sometimes it sounds like music which can be used for tv series, like 'Talisman'. Or 'Ce Matin L?' with its horn sounds and bubbling synths.
The spacey 'Sexy Boy' is very early-1980ish and must be a dance floor hit. Funny and great track, a lot more optimistic and relaxed than most Air stuff. 'Kelly Watch The Stars' is another great song - the favourite song of many an Air fan. The way it uses the synthesizer effects is simple but well-arranged in the smallest detail.
At the lower end of the scale are the two songs on which Beth Hirsch sings the lead vocals. ...
