Essential Melancholia

This may be my favorite record ever. I have listened to this album at least four times a week since it was released 12 years ago, and it has lost none of its appeal through repetition. An exquisite, almost unendurable sense of loss, isolation, and nostalgia pervades every song on this record. The shortness of the songs saves them from becoming self-indulgent and enables Sylvian to sustain a truly remarkable mood throughout. I listen to this record each September 1st to mark the end of summer. Despite the wintry quality of the songs, I have found this record to be most evocative when listened to in the late summer. The heat and haze of early September, the exhausted trees eager to shed their burden of leaves for another year, the delicate quality of daylight in a sun-dappled forest, the gentle sorrow that pervades the land at the end of the growing season: all of these moods and sensations are evoked by this extraordinarily powerful album. This type of music is not to everyone's taste, but I guarantee that this record possesses a dark beauty which will comfort you in those bleak hours of the early morning.

Overall: Very Very Good

I'm really starting to like this guy! This Is Your Time is another powerful album by this artist. As a husband and new father I can appreciate his songs he wrote to his wife and children. This is an album about life and living a good life. Michael doesn't preach to you, he just shares his enjoyment of life with you.

Title: Live Songs and Stories

Artist: David Wilcox

David at his absolute best - telling stories....

Anyone who has ever owned a David Wilcox album and who has wondered "where do these songs come from" has got to pick this one up. The music is absolutely fabulous, esp. with the wonderful background vocals and added Mandolin and Violin - but what makes this album for me is the stories...the little introductions that let you crawl insided David's head and understand why he wrote a certain song. Anyone who aspires to write music like this has got to get this album. In comparison to other Wilcox albums this is right now at the top of my list, right next to East Asheville Hardware. What a fabulous album!

This musical is amazing!

The first time I heard this CD I hated it. It wasn't what I expected and I immediately dismissed it as a poor attempt at thoughtful music. Then, as a result of family listening to it more, I learned to absolutely love it. This CD is now one of my favorite CDs, always on hand when I want to have some fun, as well as one of my favorite plays. Everything is done very well, though sometimes unexpectedly. Listen to it more than once, and you'll see yourself falling in love with it just as I did.
