Absolutely one of the best of genre

Hard Bop listeners will really enjoy this high intensity cooker of a studio session. Some 40 years later it remains without anything to really compare it to. It's my favorite John Patton album. The vintage 1965 line up here is just unbelievable and the grooves are deep and locked-in, like wet cement. All the solos are inspired. The addition of Bobby Hutcherson on the vibes adds a colorful and spacey new dimension of tonality along with John Patton's absolutely smoking B3. Grant Green's solos don't get any hotter. Otis "Candy" Finch drums with a solid, right on top of the beat ferocity that really kicks #@! Too bad he's not on many albums. Even John Patton's bass lines and comping are amazingly groovy. Check tune #2 "Latona", an uptempo latin-soul thing with a mesmerizing, infectious groove. This album puts the "Hard" in "Hard Bop". The control panel tubes at Van Gelder Studios must have been glowing hot that night.

Wonderfully rubber soul

You're walking down the street, minding your own business. Suddenly, a lavender Cadillac pulls up alongside you. The tinted window rolls down and it's Soulboy Dave beckoning to you from his lepoardskin upholstery. You get in and minutes later you're in his bachelor pad, on his round waterbed and he's crooning..."Can you hear me? Can you feel me inside?"Yes David, I think I can...

Doesn't compare to Rhino's 70's box

The music collection is awesome and covers the era well! The packaging and the book that comes with it will bring back memories! A great deal for the money.

Letting us in on the secret...

You should buy this album just for the creativity alone, it's just an added bonus that this cd also grooves and jumps and pops like a high class dance album. You can dance to most of this album till your limbs turn to tapioca or you can turn it on when you're going to bed and let it take you to dream town.
I also have this to say: I admire Bjork. Bjork could have so many singles if she wanted to. Every fast song she does, becomes a successful single. She could make a whole album of fast songs and have commercial success and more money but she chooses to make a handfull of fast songs and be real creative with the rest. Not that the fast ones arent creative.
